Is a high shool diploma required to apply?
Applicants will be expected to have graduated high school. A background in Biology and Chemistry are preferred. If the applicant does not have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, the student must be at least 18 years of age and pass a Superintendent approved qualifying test (eg. CAAT test). RECOMMENDED HIGH SCHOOL COURSESRequired for Entrance into the Program: Successful completion of high school (OSSD/Transcript of Marks) OR Be at least 18 years of age and pass a Superintendent approved qualifying test (i.e. CAAT) Proficiency in English, both written and verbal. Group A: College Preparation, or Group B: University Preparation The following courses are recommended as prerequisites: Grade 11 Biology (SB13C) or (SB13U) Grade 11 Chemistry (SCH4C) or (SCH3U) Grade 11 Health Care (TPA3C) Grade 12 Exercise Science (PSE4T) Grade 12 Medical Technologies (TPT4C) Group C: University/College, or Group D: Workplace Preparation The following courses are recommended as prerequisites: Grade 11 Science (SNC3M) or (SNC3E) Grade 12 Science (SNC4M) D'Arcy Lane Anatomy / Physiology Preparation Course Required Additional Courses in: Health Care (TPA3C) Medical Technologies (TPT4C) CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION Placement within an existing massage therapy practice, human or equine, will provide valuable experience relating to business, client relations, assessment and clinical procedures. Suggested sites in Human Massage Therapy are: chiropractic clinics, physiotherapy clinics, hospitals, wellness centres, retirement homes, home-based practices and spas. Suggested sites in Equine Massage Therapy are: veterinary clinics, care and management stables and training facilities.
I don't have a background in science. Is this a problem?
An Anatomy/Physiology Preparation course is available to the applicant. We recommend all applicants take this course unless you have prior post-secondary science training. Course costs and start dates are included in the Enrolment Information section of the web site. Further information is available through the Registrar's Office.
If English is my second language, can I still apply?
Evidence of written and verbal proficiency must be provided by submitting a certificate of completion of an ESL program or equivalent (TOEFL is acceptable).
Do I need a background with horses to study the Equine Massage Therapy program?
Our Equine Massage Therapy program provides the academic knowledge for a student to excel in equine massage therapy. If an applicant does not have a strong background with horses it is suggested that additional experience is acquired prior to commencement of the program, or concurrently during the program. This will aid the graduate in the development of a successful practice upon graduation.
I have a learning disability. Can I be accommodated?
The D'Arcy Lane Institute may be capable of accommodating students with learning disabilities. Any student wishing to apply will be considered on an individual basis, by the Director of Education, depending on their situation and capabilities.
Will I receive credit for my prior learning?
If the applicant has prior post secondary training in one or more of the subjects offered throughout the program we are pleased to provide Advanced Standing to qualified individuals. If you have prior post secondary education in any of the subjects included in the curriculum, you may be eligible for Advanced Standing status. To apply, you may be required to provide official transcripts and curriculum information from the educational facility attended. The information you submit will be reviewed by the Education Department and you will be required to write a comprehensive exam in the applied subject before Advanced Standing is granted. A $50.00 fee is charged to write each exam and the passing mark is a strict 75%. Should you not be successful you will be required to complete that subject at the school. Any student wishing to apply for Advanced Standing for any subject must apply in writing prior to the start date of the program of their first year. Advanced standing status will affect the entitlement offered to students who are eligible to receive OSAP funding.
